Air Fryer Asparagus with BBQ Onions and Fries
Crispy bacon-wrapped asparagus, seasoned fries, and rich BBQ onions for a bold comfort plate.

Bacon-Wrapped Asparagus
- 1 bunch green asparagus
- 8 to 10 slices vegan bacon
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp paprika powder
- 1/2 tsp steak pepper
- 1 tsp umami seasoning
- 1 sprig fresh rosemary, finely chopped
- Salt to taste
Seasoned Fries
- 300 g frozen fries
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp paprika powder
- 1/2 tsp steak pepper
- Salt to taste
Stewed Onions
- 2 onions, sliced into rings
- 1 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp BBQ sauce
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 60 ml Cabernet Sauvignon (or other dry red wine)
Dressing
- 3 tbsp BBQ sauce
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tsp soy sauce
- 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 tsp umami seasoning
- Pinch paprika
- Pinch steak pepper
Instructions
- Trim woody asparagus ends. Toss asparagus with olive oil, garlic, paprika, steak pepper, umami, rosemary, and salt. Wrap each spear (or small bundle) with vegan bacon.
- Toss frozen fries with olive oil, paprika, steak pepper, and salt.
- Air fry fries at 190 C for 15 to 18 minutes, shaking halfway.
- Air fry asparagus at 180 C for 10 to 12 minutes until crispy and tender.
- For onions, melt butter on low heat. Cook onions until soft (about 8 minutes), add red wine and reduce by half, then stir in BBQ sauce and Worcestershire sauce and simmer until glossy.
- Mix dressing ingredients in a bowl. Warm briefly if preferred.
- Plate fries and asparagus, spoon onions on top or on the side, and finish with dressing.
